Death of Chris Marker

We have just learned of the death of Chris Marker (July 29, 1921 – July 29, 2012, born Christian-François Bouche-Villeneuve), poet, essayist, critic, translator and activist film maker, creator of the experimental film La Jetée, as well as of such documentary films as Le Joli Mai (““this

first month of peace in seven years,” after the Algerian War) and Le Fond de l’air est rouge.  He made of Cornelius Castoriadis and Georges Steiner his two “stars,” as he told Agora International, for his 13-part miniseries, L’Héritage de la chouette (La S.E.PT., 1989).  The following year, he was so kind as to give some film making advice to Agora International for its first project—a video of the acts of the Cerisy Colloquium around the work of Castoriadis; one will now find several interviews with these Cerisy speakers and participants in the Castoriadis Videography on our website. In response to the suggestion of some AI members, Marker was also so kind as to make a small, amusing and irreverent “home movie” with a sophisticated montage for the celebration of Castoriadis’s 70th birthday.  Attached is the cover of the casette he had sent us.
