Ernst Bloch Section Added to Marxists Internet Archive

The Marxists Internet Archive has launched an Ernst Bloch section. The first text to appear there is the chapter on Marx’s Theses on Feuerbach from Vol 1 of Bloch’s The Principle of Hope. This excerpt appears to be the Plaice-Plaice-Knight translation of the entire work, which was published in Britain in 1986. A US edition of this translation was published by MIT Press in 1995. The original, incredibly, was first published in East Germany in 1954, the year after a workers’ revolt shook the entire country. To our knowledge, Bloch—at least in public a supporter of the Ulbricht regime—refrained from commenting on the event.

The Theses on Feuerbach chapter is taken from Part Two of Volume 1, a section titled “Anticipatory Consciousness.”

An alternate translation of this section (by John Maxwell) was published by Herder and Herder in the U.S. in 1971 in On Karl Marx, a work made up of excerpts from The Principle of Hope.
